Starlink Mini

Some have asked if I’d consider getting a Starlink Mini. Coincidentally, I’ve said many times that I’m running out of space for more electronics in my small car. Okay, I may have said that I’m already out of space! 😀

Starlink’s monthly subscription fees are reasonable, especially when toggling between Standby and Roam plans. However, the $500 equipment price was more than I could justify since I live within abundant 4G/5G services. Starlink dropped the purchase price of the Mini to $200 in summer 2026, likely to make room for a forthcoming hardware update. That got me interested! And since it’s a standalone unit that mounts outside the cabin, I have plenty of room, right? 😉

Switching to a flushbar rack left me with less mounting space, so there’s no place obvious outside spot to mount the Starlink dish. I managed to use the included pole mount to mount the dish to my part-time micro-tower.” The tower is only on the car about 4-6 weeks per year. Otherwise, my car has a rooftop cargo box mounted for additional cargo options. I’ll admit that the box is more of a fashion statement than that of everyday necessity. Still, it’s convenient to have mounted when I have unexpected cargo.

I had often thought that the cargo box would be a great place to hide a Starlink dish. I ordered Starlink’s Mobility Mount and made a wooden adapter to account for the box’s corrugated floor. This photo shows my mounting solution. The adapter is attached by four screws from below.

I mounted the dish near the front of the box for two reasons: 1) The tilt of the dish is biased toward my direction of travel, making it easier to aim and see obstructions; 2) Mounting the dish at the front allows me to put my heavier rooftop loads between the crossbars, shown below.

I’m frequently asked if the lid blocks the satellite signal. Yes, tree canopies and heavy rain can affect signal strength (both have water content), but the plastic cargo box is RF-transparent. The box is essentially a radome!

Heat is the main drawback to mounting electronics of any sort inside the cargo box. I wasn’t concerned at first because most of my electronics are rated to function at up to 140°F (60°C). However, I learned that Starlink Mini is rated for just 122°F (50°C). I’ve seen temperatures in the cargo box reach as high as 135°F (57°C) on our hottest summer days.

My ham radios shut down at 140°F, but they can be re-energized when temperatures fall. Rumor has it that Starlink dishes do not shut down, but instead suffer component failures when they get too hot. With that in mind, I concocted a ventilation solution.

I bought a pair of 12V 60mm fans by Noctua, cut a holes in the cargo box floor, and added some vents for intake and discharge. Small fans hardly seem sufficient to ventilate an 11 cubic-foot cargo box. However, these fans can completely exchange the box’s air every thirty seconds!

The intakes and fans are at the front while the discharge vents are at the rear. My most recent test while parked in 95°F heat and direct sunshine showed that the fans kept the box interior from exceeding 110°F. I don’t know if they’re as effective at 100°F. Oddly enough, the box runs cooler when the car is in motion due to the forced air cooling of the box’s lid.

I routed power through a pair of Starlink-compatible DC ports through the cargo box floor. I then used a combination of shorter Starlink cables to complete the connections inside. The Starlink Mini is supplied by my 24V source and the cooling fans are supplied by a switchable 12V source. I use a thermostat to control the fan when temperatures rise above 100°F inside the box. I use Noctua’s included low-noise adapter to step my car’s 14.2V to less than 12V to protect the fan.

Download speeds are slower at home since I park beside my house and I have large shade trees on my property. Download speeds vary if I’m in motion, too. But I can get respectable speeds if I park in an area with open sky.

This test was run on an overcast day alongside the James River in Virginia. My typical speeds are closer to 150 Mbps down and 20 Mbps up during a casual drive. Wide-open skies are scarce where I live.

Even with tree cover, though, I can get good speeds if I park and give the system more time to lock onto an unobstructed satellite. Still, finding open skies on most Interstate and 4-lane highways is not difficult. On the other hand, most Interstates and major highways have good 4G/5G coverage, which almost negates the need for Starlink for the casual traveler.

Does Starlink make my WeBoost cellular signal booster obsolete? Not at all! The WeBoost is more reliable under tree cover if there’s a 4G/5G signal available. But Starlink rules the roost outside of strong cellular coverage areas!

I use Starlink during contests to spot myself or watch for spots while operating outside populated areas. I can also log ham radio contacts in real time for events that support it. Mostly, though, I use it for full-time D-STAR and APRSdroid access.

If I’m traveling with my laptop, then it automatically connects to Starlink and behaves just as it would at home. The $55/mo 100 GB plan is more than enough to satisfy my goals so long as don’t stream videos.
